Buick and Appleby secure leading jockey and trainer titles

Six winners over the five days saw William Buick clinch the top jockey award at the Qatar Goodwood Festival for a third time, with Charlie Appleby receiving a first top trainer with five victories.

Buick partnered all five of Appleby’s winners throughout the week, with Mischief Magic getting the ball rolling in Tuesday’s British Stallion Studs EBF Maiden Stakes.

Secret State captured Wednesday’s Coral Beaten-By-A-Length Free Bet Handicap, with fellow three-year-olds New London and Warren Point scoring on Thursday in the G3 John Pearce Racing Gordon Stakes and the Coral Kincsem Handicap.

Rebel’s Romance was also on the scoresheet in Friday’s G3 L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate Glorious Stakes, capping a fantastic week for the trainer/jockey combination.

Buick, who currently leads the jockeys’ championship, enjoyed further success on the George Boughey-trained Oscula in Wednesday’s G3 Whispering Angel Oak Tree Stakes.

The jockey, who was riding at Newmarket this afternoon, told RacingTV: “I’ve been lucky to ride some good horses and it’s been a great week of racing. I thought I had some good rides during the week and it’s worked out.

“Oscula ran only four days after being beaten a nose in a Group Three at Ascot so for George [Boughey] and his team to bring her back after that effort was remarkable. She has to be one of the toughest horses I’ve ridden. She’s been knocking on the door and deserved that win.

“We’ve learned plenty about these horses. Secret State carried top weight and did it very well, so he’s a horse that can progress. and I was delighted with New London [John Pearce Racing Gordon Stakes] who is now taking every step in his stride after things came a bit too quick for him in the spring. He’s come back and then there was Rebel’s Romance yesterday. All nice horses with a future.

“It means a lot to be top jockey and I’m very thankful. I had some nice rides. It mostly went smoothly, and while you always look back on some races and wonder about how it went, everything went pretty well. I had good rides and thankfully most worked out well.”
